Every spring, Huntsville homeowners find pencil-width mud tubes climbing a foundation wall — or a sudden cloud of winged insects at a window — and meet subterranean termites for the first time. Here's how to read the signs and what treatment really involves.

Reading the signs

Mud tubes are the definitive sign: earth-colored tunnels the width of a pencil running up concrete, piers, or plumbing. Termites build them as humidity-controlled highways between the soil colony and your framing. Break one open — live cream-colored workers mean an active colony feeding right now.

Swarmers are the loud alarm: winged reproductives emerging in spring, often inside the house, followed by piles of identical discarded wings on sills. Termite swarmers have straight antennae and a thick waist; flying ants have elbowed antennae and a pinched waist. If you're unsure, bag a few and get them identified — the answer decides the urgency.

Why Huntsville homes are targets

Subterranean termites need moisture, and in dry West Alabama the irrigated yard is an oasis. Sprinkler overspray on the slab, mulch piled against the foundation, and downspouts dumping at the corner all maintain the damp soil band termites require.
